This is a very well-written explanation and defense of the biblical doctrine of predestination. The author, Loraine Boettner, received a bachelor of science degree from Tarkio College in 1925. He then attended Princeton Theological Seminary, receiving two degrees there: a bachelor of theology in 1928, and a master of theology in 1929.

Human beings are wired for connection. We long for deep relationships and real intimacy — both of which reflect our fundamental desire to be close to God. In this work, John Bunyan addresses the issue of imputation in great detail. The imputed righteousness of Christ was of the highest importance to him, as the only way of salvation. He opposed any manifestation of self-righteousness among Christians, any any claim of justification built thereon.

This 1754 work by Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758) is subtitled An Inquiry into the Modern Prevailing Notions of the Freedom of the Will Which Is Supposed to Be Essential to Moral Agency, Virtue and Vice, Reward and Punishment, Praise and Blame. Edwards was a Christian reformer, theologian, and author in the Calvinist tradition, and in this work he explores the necessity of divine grace for the redeeming of the damaged will of humanity. He contends that free will is an extension of, and connected to, the grace of God.

Considered a cornerstone of modern Christian theology, Charles Spurgeon’s All of Grace is an exploration into the way Christians envision themselves. While many people see themselves as strong, Spurgeon argues that if humans were strong there would have been no need for Jesus to have sacrificed himself. The actions of Jesus were shrouded in a love of the weakness of humanity, and to Spurgeon that truth was being further shrouded by modern pride. The book itself was a call to Christianity to look at repentance as a gift and to accept its grace into their lives.

Few other issues have separated the church more than the issue of tongues. Sam Storms focuses on this controversial subject with his signature insights to theology and the gifts of the spirit. What does the gift giver say about the gift He gave? Storms seeks to bring balance to this subject in The Language of Heaven as he wrestles with this sensitive issue experientially as well as theologically.
