Le Metamorfosi descrivono molte trasformazioni di persone in alberi, bestie, pietre o stelle (o viceversa), ma operano loro stesse una metamorfosi più attraente: quella dei miti greci in piccole novelle fantastiche, con personaggi vivi e svariati per temperamento, raziocinio ed emotività. Nemmeno il successivo appannarsi del prestigio di Ovidio ha mai esaurito la lista dei riverberi letterari delle Metamorfosi, fino a ieri – probabilmente fino a domani.

Il grande poema epico pubblicato nel 1581, fu in realtà iniziato a comporre quando il Tasso aveva 15 anni, nel 1559. Rivide poi il poema in seguito, dando luogo ad un altro poema: la "Gerusalemme conquistata". Questo tema lo accompagnò dunque per tutta la sua vita.

Capolavoro della letteratura inglese, di John Milton, pubblicato nel 1667, questo poema epico scritto in versi sciolti racconta l'episodio della caduta degli angeli ribelli e la cacciata dell'uomo dal paradiso terrestre. Doppia caduta quindi, la seconda conseguente alla prima. Milton compose l'intera opera mentre era completamente cieco, e aveva bisogno di scrivani che lavorassero a pagamento per lui.

Scritta da Virgilio tra il 29 e il 19 A. C., nei primi anni del regno di Augusto, l'Eneide chiude il ciclo epico degli eroi iniziato da Omero con l'Iliade e l'Odissea. Fu proprio l'imperatore Augusto, il committente dell'opera, a salvarla dalle fiamme, come Virgilio aveva disposto nel suo testamento. Il più importante poema di tutta la latinità narra l'avventuroso arrivo nel Lazio di Enea e dei pochi superstiti dalla distruzione di Troia, ai quali gli dèi hanno affidato il compito di fondare una nuova patria.

The Argonautica, also known as Jason and the Golden Fleece or Jason and the Argonauts, is the only surviving epic poem from Hellenistic Greece. It is a masterpiece whose story was well known to the audiences of the time. Virgil and other later poets were greatly influenced by it. Its author, Apollonius, was a well-known third century BC scholar living in Alexandria during the great age of Ptolomaic scholarship, and his bold attempt at writing a Homeric epic about Jason and his quest for the Golden Fleece faced a daunting audience of knowledgeable contemporaries.

The oldest long poem in Old English, written about AD 1,000, Beowulf tells the story of a great warrior of southern Scandinavia, in both youth and maturity. The monster Grendel terrorizes the Scyldings of Hrothgar's Danish Kingdom until Beowulf defeats him. As a result, he has to face her enraged mother. Beowulf dies after a battle against a fierce dragon.
