Eines Tages begegnet Maja in einem Himbeergebüsch einem merkwürdigen Tier: Es ist eckig, seltsam platt und hält die Augen geschlossen. Als die neugierige Maja versucht, das Tier mit Honig dazu zu bewegen, sich bei ihr vorzustellen, entfernt sich das Tier, ohne ein Wort mit ihr zu sprechen. Ein wunderschöner Schmetterling, der lachend über Maja im Himbeerbusch sitzt, lüftet schließlich das Geheimnis um das seltsame kleine Ungeheuer und verrät Maja sogar noch etwas anderes.

Maja fliegt glücklich und beseelt von der schönen Welt durch einen Obstgarten. Als sie am Ende des Gartens durch Brombeerranken hindurchfliegt, um zu den süßlich duftenden Jasminblüten zu gelangen, legt sich plötzlich etwas Eigenartiges über sie. Maja versteht erst nicht, was geschehen ist. Als sie schließlich die Silberfäden entdeckt, die überall an ihrem Körper festkleben, begreift sie, dass sie sich in einem Spinnennetz verfangen hat.

Auf einem Kastanienblatt nahe eines Bauernhauses begegnet Maja der Stubenfliege Puck. Als die vorlaute Fliege Majas Bienenvolk beleidigt, gerät Maja außer sich vor Wut und greift Puck an. Erschrocken verspricht Puck Maja, ihr alles über die Menschen zu erzählen, was sie weiß, wenn sie ihr dafür nichts tut. Puck erzählt Maja vom Schlummergesang der Menschen, erklärt aus ihrer Sicht, was ein Spiegel ist und verrät Maja zum Schluss, wie sie in die Behausung der Menschen gelangen kann.
