Sir Robert Anderson (1841-1918) was an Assistant Commissioner of the London Metropolitan Police. This book is his response to F.W. Farrar who had dismissed the historical claims of the book of Daniel according to the method of "higher criticism". Anderson argues that the book of Daniel was indeed written by Daniel, a Jewish official in the Babylonian and Persian court.

"Le livre de Jérémie" est un livre de l'Ancien Testament, écrit selon la tradition juive et chrétienne par le prophète Jérémie. Sa rédaction commence avant la destruction de Jérusalem par les Babyloniens car il était déjà répandu et utilisé par les Juifs durant leur exil à Babylone. La quatrième année de Joachim correspond à 605/604 av. J.-C. ; c'est-à-dire au moment où la bataille de Karkemish fait basculer le Moyen-Orient de la domination égyptienne à celle de Babylone.

"Le livre des Proverbes" (paraboles) fait partie des Livres poétiques de l'Ancien Testament. La tradition l'attribue entre autres au roi d'Israël Salomon. Les chapitres 1 à 9 expliquent ce qu'est la vraie sagesse. Les chapitres 10 à 24 contiennent un recueil de dictons sur la bonne et la mauvaise manière de vivre. Les chapitres 25 à 29 contiennent des proverbes de Salomon transcrits par les gens d'Ézéchias, roi de Juda. Le chapitre 30 résume des pensées d'un certain Agur. Le chapitre 31 décrit les qualités d'une femme valeureuse.

"Le livre des Psaumes" (en hébreu, Livre des Louanges), aussi appelé Psautier, est un livre de la Bible. Le mot "psaume" vient du grec psalmos qui désigne un air joué sur le psaltérion. "Le livre des Psaumes", selon l'Évangile de Luc et les épîtres de Paul, est interprété par les chrétiens comme une prophétie des mystères du Christ. Les Pères de l'Église ont continué cette démarche car depuis le IVe siècle, le livre des psaumes est devenu le fondement de la liturgie chrétienne.

"La prophétie d'Osée" est un livre de l'Ancien Testament. Il fut probablement achevé entre 745 et 740 av J.-C. Le thème fondamental du livre est l'amour de Dieu pour son peuple. Le prophète Osée a épousé une prostituée sacrée nommée Gomer. Son amour pour sa femme malgré ses fautes lui fait comprendre que l'amour est inconditionnel et permanent. Il établit alors un parallèle entre sa vie privée et la relation de Dieu avec la nation d'Israël.

"Le livre d'Esdras" (ou Ezra) est un livre de la Bible hébraïque et de l'Ancien Testament. Les chapitres 1 à 6 du 3e livre d'Esdras décrivent le décret de Cyrus en 537 av. J.-C. et le retour des Juifs sous Zorobabel. Dans les chapitres 7 à 10, qui se déroulent 60 à 80 ans plus tard, Esdras va à Jérusalem. Avec ses compagnons, il jeûne et prie pour obtenir protection. À Jérusalem, ils apprennent que de nombreux Juifs ont épousé des étrangères. Considérant qu'ils se sont ainsi souillés, Esdras prie pour eux et les convainc de renvoyer femmes et enfants.

"Le Lévitique" est le troisième des cinq livres de la Torah (Pentateuque). Il doit son nom au terme "lévite", prêtre hébreu issu de la tribu de Lévi. Il parle des devoirs sacerdotaux en Israël. Il met l'accent sur la sainteté de Dieu et le code selon lequel son peuple pouvait vivre pour devenir saint. Son but est d'enseigner les préceptes moraux et les rituels religieux de la loi de Moïse. Le livre comprend 27 chapitres, qui relatent l'exposé à Moïse de lois et de rites. Le livre a vraisemblablement pris forme au ve siècle av. J.-C., durant l'époque perse.
