"The Finest Story in the World" zeigt eine weniger bekannte Seite des großen Erzählers Kipling: sein Interesse an übernatürlichen Themen und damit seine Verbindung zum Fantasy- und Science-Fiction-Genre. Eine der unheimlichsten Erzählungen Kiplings, die auch Horror-Elemente enthält.

Here's a humorous collection of stories by Rudyard Kipling, the man behind the much-loved Just So Stories. "The Elephant's Child" tells the charming story of a baby elephant whose curiosity gets the best of him, while "The Cat Who Walked by Himself" tells the fanciful story of a cat who lived during a time when men lived in caves and all animals were wild.

When the young bank clerk Charlie Mears comes up with an innovative idea for a new story, he has no notion just how amazing his tale is. Inspired by dreams which are memories of former lives, he takes us back to the vivid and brutal world of ancient Greece. But Charlie’s own literary skill is not equal to the task of writing his novel. His friend must take on the challenge of extracting the finest tale in the world from the reluctant and ever-distracted brain of the young clerk. But just as there seems to be some progress, something most unexpected occurs….

Kipling’s classic tale taken from the Just So Stories. The camel who lives in the howling desert is reluctant to join the other animals in working for man. He gets his comeuppance when he is magically given a hump, so that he can work three days in a row without stopping to eat.

This short poem should be required listening between father and son. Here are profound bits of wisdom and common sense that can help any young boy strive to be more of a man. Reimagined here as something akin to cowboy poetry, the poem is performed by Glenn Hascall.

Originally published as part of the Just So stories, this tale has no animals, but is the endearing story of a Neolithic child and the hilarious ramifications of attempting to request a fresh fishing spear from the village by use of a pictorial letter. As ever, Kipling’s timeless prose is evocatively presented by Phillip J Mather - an excellent listen!

Exciting excerpts from some of the best classic stories for younger listeners, presented with classical music and, often, sound effects, to bring the characters vividly to life. Here is Mowgli, Anne of Green Gables, Peter Pan, Pinocchio, Odysseus, the monster wolf Fenrir, and Tom Sawyer getting in and out of scrapes. Before each excerpt is an introduction, setting the scene.

A scintillating collection of tales with unexpected endings.

"Captains Courageous" is an 1897 novel by Rudyard Kipling that follows the adventures of fifteen year old Harvey Cheyne Jr., the arrogant and spoiled son of a railroad tycoon. The novel originally appeared as a serialization in McClure's, beginning with the November 1896 edition.

This delightful fable from the Just So Stories of Rudyard Kipling tells of how the Cake-Parsee takes his revenge on a rude, ill-mannered rhinoceros who has stolen and eaten the Parsee's cake. The trick the Parsee plays changes the rhinoceros' skin forever.

The Rhinoceros was not always all wrinkly as he is today. In fact he was a rather smooth but bad mannered beast. His bad manners, in fact, are what got him into trouble. When you steal something that belongs to the Parsee-man, you could be in a heap of trouble. Sit back and listen as Phillip J. Mather masterfully tells the Rudyard Kipling tale of How the Rhinoceros Got His Skin.

Emma Topping reads two of the most popular stories from The Jungle Book: Rikki-Tikki-Tavi and Toomai of the Elephants.

The Ballad of Tommy Atkins was first published as “Tommy” in Kipling’s timeless Barrack-Room Ballads and Other Verses, in the 1890s. ‘Tommy Atkins’, or simply Tommy was a generic name applied to British soldiers from as early as the 18th century, but came into popular parlance during the First World War when troops were simply referred to as “Tommies”. The ballad exposes the bitterness felt by the British soldier to the public’s treatment of their forces in times of peace, and how that alters in wartime.

One of Kipling’s Just So stories that might have been named “How the Elephant Got His Trunk” takes us to the banks of the "Great Grey-Green, Greasy Limpopo" river. A timeless classic, masterfully narrated by Phillip J. Mather.
