Été 1943. Joseph Goebbels, ministre chargé de la propagande, demande à Bernie Gunther de retrouver la splendide Dalia Dresner, étoile montante du cinéma allemand en fuite à Zurich. Le détective ne peut refuser. Très vite, cette mission, à priori aussi engageante que l'objet de la recherche, prend un tour bien sinistre. Le père de la belle est un Croate antisémite de la première heure, sadique notoire, qui dirige un camp de concentration, tristement célèbre, de la région.
