A biblical anthropologist sheds new light on Paul and the first Jesus communities. Paul belonged to that generation of the Jesus movement, which stood between the Jesus group and the Evangelists. His seven undisputed letters make it clear that Paul considered himself to be an Israelite prophet sent by God to Israelites who were residing among non-Israelites, the "Gentiles", who believed in Jesus. Paul considered them to be like branches grafted to Israel, the true root (Rom 11:24).

Too often we mistake religion for an insurance policy by which we are somehow guaranteed success, health and a productive life. Three parables in particular reveal that a healthy and holy spirituality is founded on the compassionate mercy of God: The accounts of the (1) Prodigal Son, (2) the Samaritan Woman, and the (3) Good Samaritan serve to remind us that God comes to those who are worn out, broken and who feel inadequate to the tasks of life. These three parables remind us that God loves us completely, even in our deepest need.

Explaining the world around us, and the life within it, is one of the most uniquely human drives, and the most celebrated activity of science. Good explanations are what provide accurate causal accounts of the things we wonder at, but explanation's earthly origins haven't grounded it: we have used it to account for the grandest and most wondrous mysteries in the natural world. Explanations give us a sense of understanding, but an explanation that feels right doesn't mean it is true.
