"A Voyage to Laputa, Balnibarbi, Luggnagg, Glubbdubdrib and Japan" is a novel by Jonathan Swift: Setting out again, Gulliver's ship is attacked by pirates, and he is marooned close to a desolate rocky island near India. He is rescued by the flying island of Laputa, a kingdom devoted to the arts of music, mathematics, and astronomy but unable to use them for practical ends. Rather than use armies, Laputa has a custom of throwing rocks down at rebellious cities on the ground.

"Gulliver's Travels" is a novel by Jonathan Swift: Gulliver's Travels, or Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World. In Four Parts. By Lemuel Gulliver, First a Surgeon, and then a Captain of Several Ships is a prose satire of 1726 by the Irish writer and clergyman Jonathan Swift, satirising both human nature and the "travellers' tales" literary subgenre. It is Swift's best known full-length work, and a classic of English literature. Swift claimed that he wrote Gulliver's Travels "to vex the world rather than divert it".

First published in 1726, Jonathan Swift's "Gulliver's Travels" presents, as a mock travel tale, a series of thought experiments mixed with strong elements of social satire. A good part of the fun is seeing Swift work through the practical implications of each of his "what ifs?" — what if I was suddenly enormously magnified or diminished in size? for example - and delighting in the relish with which Swift indulges his great interest in matters scatalogical. As the tale progresses, Swift's skewering of English society becomes more and more pointed, reaching its ultimate ad absurdum as the ...

A Tale of a Tub marks Jonathan Swifts first significant work, crafted between 1694 and 1697 and published in 1704. Often considered his most challenging satire, this prose parody intricately weaves together sections of humorous digression and the fable of three brothers, each symbolizing a major branch of Western Christianity. The narrative is widely interpreted as a critique of religious fervor, drawing criticism from figures like William Wotton. While the tale consistently satirizes religious excess, the digressions serve as sharp parodies of contemporary literature, politics, theology, ...

Welcome, curious listener, to The Jonathan Swift Library, a most serious repository of voyages, follies, and uncomfortable truths. Within this auditory cabinet you shall find entire books read aloud, as if rescued from the dust of some neglected Enlightenment shelf. Shipwrecked and cast adrift, Lemuel Gulliver wakes to find himself on Lilliput, an island in miniature where he towers above the inhabitants and surroundings. His subsequent encounters - with the brash giants of Brobdingnag, the philosophical brutish Yahoos, the flying creatures of Laputa - give Gulliver bitter insights into life, love, and humanity.

One of the most-studied pieces of satire in history, ‘A Modest Proposal’ is a darkly funny yet scathing critique of British colonialism from an Irish lens. First published in 1729 to much backlash, Swift goes to great lengths to illustrate a potential solution to poverty and overpopulation in Ireland: parents undergoing economic hardship ought to sell their children as food for the upper classes. A masterclass in irony, Swift delves into the financial benefits of his suggestion, even offering numerous ways to prepare babies for consumption.

In his scathing and provocative pamphlet, Jonathan Swift masterfully exemplifies the art of satire by suggesting a shocking solution to the dire plight of impoverished Irish families fattening their children and selling them to wealthy Protestant landowners. Published in 1729, Swifts audacious Proposal ignited fierce backlash and accusations of barbarism—precisely the moral decay he sought to illuminate. Join us as we delve into this powerful critique of society and explore the depths of human absurdity. (Summary by Hugh)

In this volume we bring together men of the cloth, those people of faith who spent most of their lives in devotional duties in the service of one so they could, in their spare time, serve another.

The Irish are known the world over as friendly and engaging talkers with a word here and a few words there to each and every soul they meet. Their poets dazzle with talent and verse that few other nations dare compete with. What follows demonstrates why.
