We live in a world where respect, gratitude, and appreciation have been replaced by efficiency, dismissiveness, and even fear of genuine connection. Sometimes, we don't stare up from our screens and devices long enough to realize there is even another person on the other side of the tweet or email. "Is anybody out there?" One thing is for sure: This speed of life has taken a toll on our basic use of good manners and etiquette. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the decline of professional business communications.

In der Minute, in der ich Captain Patersons Raumschiff betrete, weiß ich, dass es Ärger geben wird. Aber dass er mich zusammen mit seinem Schiff in feindlichem Gebiet mit einem Frachtraum voller illegaler Waffen zurücklässt, ist selbst für ihn ein neuer Tiefpunkt. Jetzt entern vier Aliens das Schiff, die keine Menschen mögen - und Frauen noch weniger. Es dürfte auch keine Hilfe sein, dass ich in ihren Augen mit gefährlicher Schmuggelware unterwegs bin. Das ist nicht gut. Ganz und gar nicht gut.

Kate. Verlass die Erde und zieh nach New Terran, haben sie gesagt. Das wird lustig, haben sie gesagt. Allerdings finde ich es überhaupt nicht lustig, entführt und auf einem merkwürdigen Alien-Marktplatz zum Kauf angeboten zu werden. Und noch weniger lustig wird es, als ich von einem Kerl gekauft werde, der versucht, mir ein lebendiges Abendessen zu servieren. Es ist so lebendig, dass es auf meinem Teller herumkriecht.

Ich habe kein Problem damit, Männer um meinen Finger zu wickeln - große rote Aliens hingegen sind eine andere Sache. Nachdem Voxen mich vor dem Erfrieren rettet, zeige ich mich auf die einzige Weise erkenntlich, die mir in diesem Moment einfällt. Ein bisschen harmloser Spaß für uns beide. Allerdings scheint Voxen das Konzept "nur zum Vergnügen" kein Begriff zu sein. Er kennt bloß "für immer".

Ich hüte ein dunkles Geheimnis und habe nicht die geringste Ahnung, wie ich es meinen Freundinnen beichten soll. Als wir uns mitten in der verschneiten Wildnis Colorados verirren, finde ich die perfekte Lösung für mein Dilemma: ein bedrohliches Monster, das zwischen den Tannen lauert. Mein Plan ist simpel. Ich opfere mich, damit sich meinen Freundinnen in Sicherheit bringen können. Wenn ich nicht mehr lebe, kann ich ihnen auch nichts gestehen. Idiotensicher. Zu meinem großen Entsetzen hat das Monster gar kein Interesse daran, mich zu töten.

Statt die verschneite Winterlandschaft durch ein leicht beschlagenes Fenster mit einem prasselnden Feuer im Kamin als Hintergrundmusik zu bewundern, wird mein Weihnachtstrip zu einem nackten Kampf ums Überleben. Ich habe keine Ahnung, wo ich bin, und stolpere völlig erschöpft durch die Wildnis Colorados, während bereits die Sonne untergeht. Wenn kein Wunder passiert, weiß ich nicht, wie ich es durch die Nacht schaffen soll.

Eigentlich wollte ich Weihnachten in Ruhe mit meinen besten Freundinnen in einer Hütte feiern, die wir über die Feiertage gemietet haben - mitten in der verschneiten Wildnis von Colorado. Doch stattdessen schaffe ich es, kopfüber einen Berg hinunterzustürzen und vor dem Weihnachtsmann zu landen. Kurz bin ich mir sicher, den Verstand verloren zu haben, denn mir ist durchaus klar, dass es den Weihnachtsmann nicht gibt. Was es allerdings ganz eindeutig gibt, sind riesige Aliens mit roter Haut und schneeweißen Haaren. Da wird man sich auf den ersten Blick ja wohl irren dürfen.
