Nagtrabaho si Crystal bilang isang Registered Nurse sa isang syudad ng higit pa sa 30 taon, na nangangalaga ng mga homeless sa kabuoan ng kanyang career. Isinulat niya ang koleksyong ito ng mga maiiksing mga tula para maibahagi ng unit-unti, ang kasalimuotan at mga bunga ng pagiging homeless. Kanyang ipinapakita sa mga tulang ito, ang ilang mga kaalaman at pagkamadamayin para sa mga nasa sitwasyong ito. Umaasa siya na ang koleksyong ito ay magagamit ng mga simpleng tao at mga propesyonal.

Crystal E. Barker creció en una granja en las colinas de Grayson, Kentucky. Obtuvo su licenciatura en Enfermería en Berea College y la maestría en Enfermería en la Universidad Estatal de California en Los Angeles. En la actualidad atiende a los veteranos militares como Enfermera Registrada en el Centro Médico de Asuntos para Veteranos, en Nevada. Hoy en día escribe en las primeras horas del amanecer, viendo como la luz del sol cubre su hoja de papel, mientras escucha las notas despertadoras del canto de los pajarillos.
