My life is predictable, steady, and simple. I spend my time recruiting and training the newly departed to the Soul Chasers Society, the group dedicated to ridding the Above of the reckless spirits haunting it, and I love it. It's satisfying and safe. A life behind the scenes suits me just fine. Until the day that my name is on the rotation and I have to tackle the most unruly Horror yet. Its escape should be impossible, and yet, here we are.

I've learned the hard way that the only way to be effective is to keep your feelings out of it, no matter how appealing and tempting your target is. So when I meet Keagan with his sexy scowl and intense gaze, it doesn't take us long to make it physical. I'm only human, and resisting the man is beyond my mortal abilities. The thing is, he's deeply troubled, and he's got one nasty spirit haunting him. The Deceiver taunting his thoughts is more powerful than any Horror I've faced before, and the more I get to know Keagan, the more concerned I am that I can pull him back from the darkness.

I'm dead. Or at least I was. Until I got the opportunity to return to the life I was abruptly torn away from. It's a no-brainer as far as I'm concerned. I'm not done living yet. The catch? Become a Soul Chaser. Hunt down the Horrors, deadly souls that escaped The Below, and return them to the depths where they belong.

Maybe asking my burly golden retriever contractor to be my fake fiancé was a bad idea. But as the saying goes, desperate times and all that. Listen, getting married again sounds about as fun as a shopping spree in a dumpster, so dating is definitely off the table. I've resisted Oakley's tempting presence, knowing it can only lead to trouble, and I don't need any more of that. Despite the obvious attraction, we've managed to keep a platonic and professional distance.

The college twink scene is wearing on me. Sure, it works out for a no-commitment guy like myself, but the constant drama and nameless rotation of pretty boys in and out of my bed isn't as exciting as it once was. Maybe watching one of my best friends find love is poking at me too. That's what was on my mind when someone new walked into Moby's looking lost, nervous, and extremely biteable. It only seemed right that I offered to keep him company, and when he readily accepted, I was looking forward to trying someone older, mature, and not looking for anything serious. Just like me.

Anyone who spends time with me knows two things. One: If I want something, I get it, which is how I end up back in my old college haunts, buying a dilapidated bar with my five best friends and staring down the barrel of an unknown future. Two: The idea of settling down makes my skin crawl, and that's how I made it to forty with zero serious relationships in the rearview mirror. At least I'm smart enough to hire the right people.
