Isaac Race thought he'd found a new family and home. A new Life. He had, but it's all about to be snatched away. When an ambitious enemy launches a sneak attack on the USA, his peaceful life is shattered and Isaac, by his very nature a loner, must band together with a ragtag group of survivors to make their way to a sanctuary, three states away in the depths of a vicious east coast winter.

In the middle of the holidays, a biological attack wreaks havoc on the U.S. The virus is quick. Deadly. Unstoppable. The country is left in tatters. For Isaac Race, it’s especially bitter. After the death of his parents and sister, he was just getting his life back on track - the weaponized virus changes all that. Battered by the fresh deaths of his foster parents, but hardened by the year he’s endured, he emerges from the temporary safety of his home to seek out other survivors during the worst winter in years.

America has fallen to a catastrophic stealth attack and a ground invasion of the continental United States has begun. Sacramento teenager, Jack Monaghan, has just buried his parents and needs to work out what to do. Trouble is, his older sister has locked herself in her room and won't eat, drink or talk to him—let alone sit down and plan what they'll do to survive.

Luke begins his trek back to Manchester with the latest bunch of ‘recruits’ for the cities. He is strangely impressed by the ‘old’ man, Ragland, who, after proving he is not a threat asks if he can travel south with them. Meanwhile, back in Manchester, a group of children have gone missing after a day out exploring. Isaac, Indigo and the other parents are frantic with worry and with every hour that passes, the more convinced Isaac becomes that its not just a case of them being lost in the woods.

Hundreds of millions died, but for those left, surviving the attack was only the beginning… In the aftermath of the daring rescue of the children from the slavers, the Manchester enclave, led by Isaac and Luke, begin preparing for war. They can’t allow their powerful enemy to gain a foothold in New York State, but they know, even with the strength of Concord backing them, they will not have the manpower and resources to do it alone.
