Bambi

 Bambi is the beloved story of a young deer’s childhood and coming of age in a forest with many dangers. Salten's most famous work is Bambi (1923), or Bambi, in the Woods, also known as Bambi: A Life in the Woods. It was translated into English in 1928 and became a Book-of-the-Month Club success, and then formed the basis of the 1942 animated Disney classic, Bambi.

Bambi, a Life in the Woods is a coming-of-age story that follows the life of Bambi, a deer, from his birth through old age. As Bambi grows and matures, he experiences the loss of his mother, the finding of a mate, and learns about betrayal and essential lessons of the forest from his father. But most importantly, he realizes the danger posed by “He,” the term used by the animals to describe human hunters in the forest. In the end, Bambi learns the vital tools to survive in an unforgiving world.

Complex, thought-provoking, and beautifully written, Felix Salten’s original Bambi isn’t the simplistic tale told in film. While Bambi grows and matures, he sees that the creatures of the forest are constantly forced to come to terms with their own mortality, for death comes unexpectedly and frequently.
