Following the success of his earlier political thrillers, including Absolute Power and The Camel Club, Baldacci turned to the military to find inspiration for the John Puller series. First published in 2011, when American troops were still on the ground in Iraq, Baldacci went to great lengths to understand the hearts and minds of American military personnel. In fact, he spent time at a military base and underwent a gruelling functional fitness training course.
