After nearly two decades in Britain, Bill Bryson, the acclaimed author of such best sellers as The Mother Tongue and Made in America, decided it was time to move back to the United States for a while. This was partly to let his wife and kids experience life in Bryson's homeland, and partly because he had read that 3.7 million Americans believed that they had been abducted by aliens at one time or another. It was thus clear to him that his people needed him.

Home to the giant tortoises that gave them their name, the Galapagos Islands lie one thousand kilometres off the coast of mainland Ecuador. The famous group of islands remained untouched by humanity for thousands of years, being only charted in the seventeenth century. Two hundred years later the stunning wildlife provided Charles Darwin with the perfect place to work on his theory of evolution. Darwin’s book ‘The Origin of the Species’ was partially inspired by his trip to the Galapagos.

Easter Island lies 3,700 km, or 2,299 from the nearest continent and is one of the most isolated places on the planet. Also commonly known as Rapa Nui, the island is probably most famous for the giant statues called Moai that populate the island, mainly near the shores. En el buque de la armada francesa Marion Dufresne; viajó a la isla Rodrigues (la isla de los solitarios), Crozet (la isla de los Albatros de cejas negras), Kerguelen (la isla de los leopardos de mar), Saint Paul (la isla del volcán apagado) y Ámsterdam (la isla descubierta por Elcano).

Durante el cuarto viaje Jorge recorrió islas US Dollaropeas muy poco conocidas, como Lampedusa, en el Mediterráneo; la Isla Pomona, al norte del Reino Unido; la Soberana Isla de Lundy; la Isla Sark, el último territorio feudal de US Dollaropa; la Isla Mainland, Helgoland, una isla que los alemanes trocaron a los ingleses por la Isla Zanzíbar, la Isla Tresco, etc.

Durante el séptimo viaje, Jorge recorrió parte del Océano Pacífico, desde Callao hasta Tahití, en la Polinesia Francesa, a bordo del crucero Maxim Gorki, escalando con mucha fortuna en el "Santo Grial" de los viajeros: la isla de Pitcairn (la de los amotinados del navío Bounty).
