England, 1914. The world is at war. Captain Hastings, injured and shaken, is invited to Styles Court to recover. Un giovane ufficiale inglese ferito viene ospitato da un vecchio amico nella sua lussuosa residenza di campagna. Il soggiorno sarà però tutt'altro che tranquillo. La padrona di casa, matrigna dell'amico, ha sposato un uomo di vent'anni più giovane, e i figliastri, scavalcati nell'eredità, sembrano tramare qualcosa. Lorsque la richissime Emily Inglethorp est retrouvée empoisonnée dans son manoir de Styles, les soupçons se portent rapidement sur son très jeune mari, Alfred Inglethorp. Mais le verdict paraît trop évident au colonel Hastings, qui décide de faire appel à son vieux compagnon Hercule Poirot. Ce dernier met alors tout en œuvre pour découvrir à qui pourrait profiter le crime. Car il y a aussi les beaux-enfants de Mme Inglethorp, et Cynthia, la protégée de la défunte : tous auraient pu se procurer la strychnine qui a servi à la tuer.
