Grief Specialist | Chaplain | Founder of The Institute for Compassionate Grieving

AmarAtma Singh Khalsa is a grief specialist, chaplain, educator, author, and founder of the Institute for Compassionate Grieving, where he is pioneering an embodied approach to grief that integrates science, spirituality, and compassionate care. Drawing from mind-body medicine, contemplative traditions, and somatic healing practices, his work helps individuals and communities navigate loss as a pathway toward greater resilience, meaning, and transformation.

A graduate of Harvard Divinity School, AmarAtma developed the Compassionate Grieving Model, an interdisciplinary framework that expands contemporary understandings of grief by honoring the emotional, physical, relational, existential, and spiritual dimensions of loss. His work challenges the notion that grief is simply a problem to overcome, instead recognizing it as a fundamental human experience that can deepen connection, compassion, and aliveness.

AmarAtma is the author of The Tender Art of Grieving, a compassionate guide that invites readers to cultivate a more embodied and heart-centered relationship with loss. Through his writing, teaching, and clinical work, he offers practical and contemplative tools that honor grief not as something to fix, but as an expression of our capacity to love.

For more than fifteen years, AmarAtma has supported thousands of individuals through experiences of loss, including patients and families in hospital settings, healthcare professionals, caregivers, and grieving communities. As both a clinician and educator, he bridges evidence-informed practices with ancient wisdom traditions to create accessible pathways for healing and growth.

A sought-after speaker, teacher, and retreat leader, AmarAtma has shared his work with audiences at Harvard, Stanford, Kripalu, and other educational and wellness institutions. Through courses, retreats, and public scholarship, he continues to advance the growing fields of grief literacy, embodied care, and compassionate community building.

Through the Institute for Compassionate Grieving, his writing, and a global online community of more than 240,000 people, AmarAtma is helping reshape the cultural conversation around loss. His work invites us to move beyond isolation and pathology, cultivating a more compassionate relationship with grief—one rooted in community, embodied presence, and reverence for the impermanence that gives life its meaning.
