Brad Franklin knows how fast the Big Bend country can turn on you. On a self-guided aoudad hunt in the mountains of Southwest Texas, Brad and his longtime hunting partner Jared Cullison got their ram. Then the October heat climbed toward 100 degrees, the water ran low, and the mountain started winning. Two experienced hunters who had done this before couldn't make it off the ridge.

Brad's 17-year-old son, Caden, could. Alone, in country he had never crossed, he picked his way over the rocks, found camp, and came back for two men he couldn't even see.

The Toughest Country is Brad and Jared's true account of that day, told with dry humor and hard-earned humility. Jared first wrote about the hunt as "The Roughest Country" in Huntin' Fool magazine. Brad still hunts West Texas, and he still carries more water than he needs.
