Opposing the concept that never the twain shall meet, David introduces paranormal activity into everyday life, and the fantasy of cultural folklore. He was encouraged to write by his love of history and when genealogy revealed a Scandinavian heritage he began a study of world cultures. His strong characterisations make his stories real and his writing style is described as Magical Realism. David was born in 1937 in Barrow-in-Furness, a shipbuilding town on the fringe of the English Lake District, the main location of his novels. The country was heading into WW2 and when he was almost four years old the bombing of the nearby shipyard commenced. He remembers vividly, the calm fear in the air-raid shelter, the drone of aircraft in the dark sky, searchlights, ack-ack guns, and the warden's sporadic shrill whistle. His teenage years were filled with sport, playing saxophone and clarinet in Palais dance bands and serving an apprenticeship with Vickers Armstrong. A merchant Navy stint and an overland journey in a converted ambulance brought him to Australia and New Zealand via Bombay and Singapore. He married Patricia in 1968 and their twins Tracey and Martin were born in Australia in 1972. There were careers in construction engineering, design draughting, milk vending and accommodation management. On retirement David completed a professional writing course, and two years later he published his first novel.
