My next book, THE STRATEGIST: HOW TO THINK ABOUT WAR AND POLITICS, will be published by Princeton University Press in October 2026. It distills what I have learned in some forty years of study, teaching, reflection and practice, to include stints in the Department of Defense, the intelligence community, and as Counselor of the Department of State. After thirty-four years as a professor at Johns Hopkins University, including time as Dean of its School of Advanced International Studies, I have transplanted to the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington DC, where I hold the Arleigh Burke Chair in Strategy. I am a regular contributor to The Atlantic as well. Most of my books, SUPREME COMMAND, CONQUERED INTO LIBERTY and THE BIG STICK, among others, deal with military history, defense policy and civil-military relations, although THE HOLLOW CROWN, my most recent book, discusses what Shakespeare has to teach us about how leaders rise, rule and fall.
