I was born in Warwickshire, England and now live in Dorset, on the world heritage site of the Jurassic Coast. I've been published for the last 40 years. My career began when I won a national short story competition in 1986 and for the seven years following I had 120 short stories published by IPC Magazines. My first novel was published in 1994 and was followed by 8 psychological and/or supernatural thrillers under the name Elizabeth McGregor, and 2 comedies under the name Holly Fox.
In 2013 I was commissioned by Berkeley Books in the USA to write the Rutherford Park series under the name Elizabeth Cooke. I've written two non-fiction true crime under that same name. In 2023 I began writing a trilogy of crime thrillers under the name E M Scott. Also in this period I was shortlisted for three international short story competitions.
My publishers have been Headline, Macmillan, Bantam Press, Profile Books, Berkley Books and Bedford Square Publishing.
Whenever I use an historical setting I'm always determined to get details exactly right - research is my passion, particularly the 18th century and WW1.
I'm an avid reader, but also love art, archaeology and art history. During the summer I'm an enthusiastic sea swimmer. Aside from beautiful Dorset, I think my heart belongs to Cumbria and the Lake District. I love climbing mountains. My DNA says I am 30% Danish, 30% Anglo-Saxon, 30% Celt, and 10% Spanish Basque. I must have strong seafarers somewhere in my ancestors. Perhaps that's why I wrote THE ICE CHILD, an account of the 1845 expedition to find the North-West Passage.
