Hannah Nyala West is a writer and historian, a survivor of family violence, and a tracker. Raised on a small farm in southern Mississippi, Hannah married young and moved to Oklahoma where she had two children but was battered by their father. Escaping to the mountains of Wyoming and then the Colorado Desert of southern California, she began working as a search and rescue tracker after her children were abducted. On their return home, she studied anthropology at Scripps College and the University of Illinois, then spent a year as a fellow of the Thomas J. Watson Foundation studying tracking in the Namib and Kalahari Deserts, before going on to earn a Ph.D. in history from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She punctuated these years of formal study with field research on tracking in the Tanami and Mojave Deserts, learning how to quilt and dance contra and build stringed instruments, and figuring out how to make the perfect southern biscuit. A grandmother now and delighted about it, Hannah writes and teaches history for the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. She splits her time between a small homestead in the desert southwest and a tiny village in the upper midwest.
