Heston Russell is a retired Australian Special Forces Major, and highly-decorated combat Veteran, having served 16 years in the Military with operational service in Timor Leste, Iraq and four deployments to Afghanistan. He joined the Australian Army at the age of 17 as a fifth generation Australian Army Veteran - with his family's military service additionally including WWI, WWII, Korean, Vietnam, Malaysia, Iraq, Afghanistan and more.
After suffering through his own mental health issues culminating with his suicidal ideation in August 2020, Heston is on a mission to break down the stigmas surrounding mental health and vulnerability. Using his lived experience and public profile, Heston has sought to cut through many of the conventional barriers to achieving support at the community level, encouraging others to not be defined by their trauma, but instead empowered by the experience and perspective this can provide in helping others and achieving greater prevention.
Heston founded the Voice Of A Veteran movement in September 2020, as a platform for Veterans to speak out and be heard, and to take action to fix the system that should be projecting our patriotic heroes to greatness after service. He then campaigned for the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide, achieving this in April 2021. Heston now primarily supports the charity Veteran Support Force (VSF.org.au) that he founded in July 2021 to lead the way in proactive support and cultural change for the Veteran community and their families.
Heston now lives in Brisbane with his Mini-Dachshund (Sausage Dog) Son Copper - who is the star of 'The Adventures of Copper' illustrated books series.
Heston never had a dog growing up, and when he was finally surprised with his fist puppy, Copper, his whole world changed - for the better. Heston began writing rhyming stories about Copper on his phone during flights and other quiet moments, as a creative release that has since turned into 'The Adventures of Copper'. These books are designed to present real lived experiences shared between Heston & Copper, while drawing out valuable lessons that may help parents teach their children in a fun and informal way. 'The Adventures of Copper' series will also provide children and adults of all ages with beautifully illustrated stories that are guaranteed to bring a smile as they depict Copper in all his cute and cuddly Sausage-Dog splendour.
