J.J. Anselmi grew up in Rock Springs, Wyoming, a coal-mining boomtown. He's the author of Doomed to Fail: The Incredibly Loud History of Doom, Sludge, and Post-metal; and Heavy: A Memoir of Wyoming, BMX, Drugs, and Heavy F*cking Music. He wrote the liner notes for the 2017 reissue of Sepultura's classic record, Chaos A.D., and his writing has been featured in The New Republic, Noisey, The A.V. Club, Revolver, Decibel, and other popular outlets. An active metal musician, he lives with his family in Southern California.
