My name is Lena Düsterhus, I am 31 years old and I live with endometriosis myself. It is truly close to my heart to raise awareness about this disease – among other things on my Instagram channel @endomood_ and in my podcast “Hereinspaziert: Kaffeeklatsch mit Endometriose”. I received my endometriosis diagnosis in 2020, but the road leading up to it was long. I had countless visits to the gynecologist and kept hearing the same responses: “Just switch the pill!”, “That’s normal!”, “Just take some painkillers.” When I finally stopped taking the pill – actually because I wanted to get pregnant – the pain became so severe that nothing worked anymore. Instead of planning a family, I suddenly had to go through five surgeries. And then came the diagnosis that I first had to come to terms with: chronic, incurable, infertile. I gathered all my courage, quit my beloved job as a preschool teacher, and looked for work that I could better manage alongside my illness. Along the way, I discovered many methods that help me: acupuncture, physiotherapy, CBD oil, essential oils, acupressure, abdominal massages, cupping, TENS, heat therapy, yoga, breathing exercises, an anti-inflammatory diet, and much more. Even today, I still experience pain flare-ups that sometimes push me to my limits. But I have learned to live with it. There are good days and bad days, but despite everything I can say today: I am happy despite endometriosis.
