Po miłosnym zawodzie i niezasłużonej degradacji w pracy Hamish Macbeth postanawia wyjechać na wakacje. Niestety, srodze się zawodzi. Jedzenie w pensjonacie jest okropne, a mężczyzna w pokoju obok strofuje swoją żonę tak głośno, że nie tylko Hamish życzy mu śmierci. Ale ze wszystkich pensjonariuszy tylko nasz policjant wyraża to tak głośno i dobitnie. Kiedy zwłoki krewkiego małżonka wypływają na powierzchnię rzeki Skag, Hamish jest głównym podejrzanym.

Lokalny macho Randy Duggan, podobno były zapaśnik, wyzywa Hamisha Macbetha na pojedynek.
