MJ Wayland is a British writer, researcher and historian specializing in ghosts, supernatural belief and unexplained history. He has been an active investigator since 1988. His work starts in the archives: period newspapers, court records, parish registers, much of it never digitized. He traces reported hauntings back to their earliest accounts.

MJ Wayland is the author of eleven books. 50 Real Ghost Stories (2011) has been a Top 10 bestselling paranormal book on Amazon UK at Halloween and Christmas since publication. 50 Real American Ghost Stories (2013) has done the same on Amazon US. His new series, American Strange, covers the United States place by place: hauntings, weird history and unsolved crime.

MJ Wayland has consulted on or appeared in more than two hundred television programmes, documentaries, radio shows and podcasts, among them Most Haunted, Ghost Adventures, Ghost Hunters International and Coast to Coast AM. He has provided consultancy for television, film and theatre since 1995, and was editor of Mysterymag from 1998 to 2013. His research has been published in the Daily Mail, the Daily Telegraph, the Guardian, the Sun and the Mirror. He has lectured at universities and festivals across the UK and internationally, including The Sunday Times Literature Festival, where he appeared alongside Professor Bruce Hood.

MJ Wayland founded Mary King's Ghost Fest in Edinburgh and programmed the fourteen-day Oxford Castle Ghost Fest in 2009 and 2010. He has organised paranormal investigations at Warwick Castle, the Tower of London, Harewood House and other historic sites across Britain.

His interest in ghosts began in childhood, after reading Valerie Salim's Ghost Hunter's Guide to Sheffield. The book sent him to the Sheffield Archives to look for older, unrecorded hauntings. He joined research societies in his early teens and has since researched cases from British castles to the graveyards of New Orleans.
