I always wanted to be a doctor. I became a gastroenterologist after studying English literature at Haverford College and medicine at Yale University. I’ve been treating patients and training gastroenterologists for over 30 years, with particular clinical interest in pancreatic disease, abdominal pain, gastrointestinal malignancies and therapeutic GI endoscopy. I taught first at Yale School of Medicine and then at Mayo Clinic, as a Professor of Medicine. My Christian faith has shaped my understanding of healthcare practice, sustained me in difficult clinical situations, and brought me fulfillment in patient care. It also led me to collaborate with partners in sub-Saharan Africa on medical education and research throughout my career. In 2019, my wife Janet and I joined SIM USA and moved to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where I teach at the nation’s two leading referral hospitals. Janet and I have three adult daughters who are each in their own way making our world a better place.
