Some of the most challenging and blessed situations in life are those that demand of us strength we don't think we have, patience we know we lack, and resources that are often scant or nonexistent. Caregiving is one of these challenges, as is living with disability, chronic illness, and ongoing pain. I know this well because I've been a caregiver to loved ones and I live with lupus and other ongoing, often serious, conditions. In the midst of the challenges, I've learned time and again that with faith and trust in God, not only is it possible to get through the "storms" of life, but it is a blessing to be given the opportunity to experience them. Why?
Because when we approach these trials with faith, we are not facing them alone. Rather, we are enveloped by our loving God who brings graces, comfort, peace and, yes, some joy along the way. We meet beautiful people and forge encouraging bonds that we would never have found otherwise. We grow in confidence, strength, and what St. Pope John Paul II calls, "spiritual maturity" that abides within us and deepens, drawing us ever closer to our Lord.
Since my diagnosis of lupus and my first experience of caring for and about a family member, now deceased, my writing has merged with my desire to better understand human suffering through the lense of faith and to bring words of encouragement, light, comfort, and peace to others who are experiencing similar storms. The three books of mine that are currently in print - Peace in the Storm: Meditations on Chronic Pain and Illness; Peace in the Storm for Caregivers, and Beyond Pain: Job, Jesus, and Joy - Revised Edition - go right to the heart of the precious and vital intersections of faith and suffering, caregiving and calling, and disability, illness, and pain and the trust, joy, and peace that walking the journey with God brings.
Blessedly, in addition to my books, blogs, and other writing, a ministry has emerged. The Peace in the Storm Project seeks to eliminate the detachment, loneliness, and isolation so often experienced by caregivers and persons with significant health challenges. So, whether in private with one of my books, or with others as part of a faith-fellowship group arranged through The Peace in the Storm Project, faith can grow ever stronger, ever brighter, and ever more peaceful. And many more will come to understand that we are never alone.
I have several writing projects in the works, including new books. Please be sure to follow me on Amazon so you learn the latest news when it's available! Meantime, I am grateful for your prayers - and your feedback on Amazon and elsewhere.
With gratitude in our Risen Lord,
Maureen
