Niayesh Afshordi is a theoretical physicist and cosmologist who explores some of the biggest questions in science: How did the universe begin? What happens inside black holes? And what can gravity tell us about the fundamental laws of nature? He is a Professor of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Waterloo and an Associate Faculty member at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics.

Afshordi grew up in Iran and earned his Bachelor’s degree in Physics from Sharif University of Technology. He later received his PhD from Princeton University and held research positions at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and the Perimeter Institute. His research spans cosmology, gravitational waves, black holes, dark energy, and quantum gravity, often focusing on places where established theories may point toward something new.

He is the co-author, with science filmmaker Phil Halper, of Battle of the Big Bang: The New Tales of Our Cosmic Origins, which explores the competing ideas—and the scientists behind them—that are reshaping our understanding of the universe’s beginnings. The book was named one of Smithsonian magazine’s Ten Best Science Books of 2025.
