Nilanjana Sengupta, based in Singapore, has built a reputation in books that travel to unchartered territories. While Chickpeas to Cook (Penguin Random House 2022), deals with sensitive topics of religion and women of smaller communities in Singapore, in The Votive Pen (Penguin Random House 2020), she claims to go where a biography has never been before – into the mind of a poet! Endorsed as first book of its kind to look closely at a literary figure of Singapore, The Votive Pen was shortlisted for both the SG Literature Prize and SG Book Award. Sengupta’s other books include A Gentleman’s Word (ISEAS 2012, CUP 2013) where she chronicles the legacy of a forgotten war hero, Subhas Chandra Bose, across Southeast Asia. In The Female Voice of Myanmar (CUP 2015), she writes of the latent masculine bias of Burmese culture and female voices that cut through the clutter. Sengupta also writes for The Straits Times and for publications of the National Heritage Board. Her books have been critically acclaimed, adopted for university courses and translated into multiple languages. She has been associated with the National University of Singapore in various research capacities.
