I have to believe in hope. I have to believe in my love for Death, for a future beyond this pain and drama. But why does hope feel like such a foolish dream at this point?

The streets have been my home for as long as I can remember. To get by, I use my magic tricks, bringing smiles to the faces of adults and children alike. As a warlock, my powers are limited. Nothing like a witch's magical skills. Basically, I'm a glorified magician as well as a second-class citizen.

I thought trying to survive in a zombie-infested world was dramatic enough. However, after the darker turn everything has taken recently, that all seems like a walk in the park now. And don't even mention the plethora of mind-blowing revelations!

After one of our many enemies makes a life-shattering move against us, Tae and I are running for our lives again. The witches are hot on our heels, adding to our myriad of problems. And the drama keeps on piling up.

My life has really taken a complicated turn here in Oakthorne. I keep hoping some fairy godmother will show up and offer to turn back time for me. Not too much, just enough to ease this pain. Yeah. Right....

The dead never move on, not since Death walked off the job and disappeared. As a necromancer, it's my job to police the spirits while they remain stuck and, well, problematic a lot of the time. Death really needs to take his head out of his backside and get back to work, wherever he might be....

There's so much danger out there. Coming for me, coming for the world. Demons and darkness and craziness everywhere. Plus, the mysteries keep on piling up. So many of them! Not good for my already overloaded mind.

For the past two years, a virus aptly named Dawn has risen every day at first light to kill any human it touches, turning them into ravenous zombies. There's no cure, no form of resistance against it, nothing to turn things around. Most of the living humans are gone now.

Secrets are like hot coals—you can't hold onto them for long. And my biggest secret just burned right through my hands.
