Samuel Markind has long been interested in the brain. So, it’s perfectly understandable that he delved into philosophy as an undergraduate; years later, it was a natural choice for him to specialize in neurology after he finished medical school. During his more than 30 years in practice, he evaluated and treated patients with a wide range of neurologic conditions, which provided him with a “front row seat” to observe brain functioning across a whole host of circumstances. The combination of neurology and love of music fuels Dr. Markind’s desire to share his understanding of the relationship between music and the brain with others. This passion led him to develop continuing education presentations that musically explore the brain basis of creativity. It also inspired him to write his book, Music Between Your Ears, from Johns Hopkins University Press. The book focuses on the evolutionary value of music to the brain, illuminates ways that music benefits the brain, and encourages people to engage actively with music. Sam and his wife have 3 grown children and became grandparents in 2022. They live in Connecticut and enjoy dancing together.
