Behind the name Sophia Kallisti lies more than thirty years of engagement with Greek mythology, ancient literature and philosophy, with a particular interest in the spiritual imagination of the ancient world and what it can teach us.

The name Kallisti, meaning “to the fairest”, was chosen deliberately. It recalls the inscription on the golden apple that set the judgement of Paris, and ultimately the Trojan War, in motion.

Sophia Kallisti publishes books that take familiar stories and look more closely at what lies beneath them. Each begins with a question: what has been overlooked, simplified or lost? The ambition is to produce the books we had always wanted to read: books grounded in careful research, accessible to the general reader and attentive to the ancient sources.

Rebel Women of Greek Mythology grew out of a video series created some five years before the book. The original scripts explored individual women from Greek mythology and were later revisited and substantially expanded. The result is a broader exploration of these women that seeks to restore the agency and complexity of figures too often treated as supporting characters in somebody else’s story.

An interest in the lost literature of antiquity led to The Telegony, a verse reconstruction of the ancient sequel to Homer’s Odyssey. After the Odyssey takes the surviving evidence in another direction, developing it into a novel about homecoming, recognition and the families left in a hero’s wake. The novel gives imaginative life to the characters and their relationships while following the sequence of events preserved in the ancient summary of the lost poem.

Across these works, Sophia Kallisti returns to what ancient stories preserve, what they leave unsaid, and why they continue to matter.
