Stephen Rice grew up in Henderson, New York, about an hour south of the Canadian border. He moved to Saint Paul, Minnesota, to attend Hamline University. After college, he worked various jobs, including driving and basketball coaching. He decided to go back to school at Brown Institute in Minneapolis to learn computer programming. There, he met and fell in love with his wife, Trish. They raised two children in Eagan, Minnesota, before returning to Saint Paul.
