U.H. WILKEN (1937–2001) wrote his first novel at the age of 19. He achieved his breakthrough in 1963 with the novel *Der Sattelwolf*. His books were bestsellers as early as the 1960s and 1970s and are now considered classics of the genre, including crime novels such as “Heisser Sommer, kalter Mord” and “Mörder im Minirock.” They were published worldwide in translations (including Flemish, Finnish, Hebrew, Portuguese, and Korean). His unbelievable body of work comprises well over 600 novels; more than 80 million copies sold delighted fans and readers even during this extraordinary author’s lifetime. His legendary major series—The Dan Oakland Story*, ZURDO, and Cheyenne — remain unforgettable. They cemented his reputation as one of the absolute giants of the historically authentic, modern Western novel; with his monumental saga—spanning more than 82 volumes—about the lone woodsman Dan Oakland, he created an unforgettable literary monument to the tragic struggle of North America’s indigenous peoples for their homeland. In contrast to the idealized “Western romanticism” of many of his colleagues, Wilken—who was often mistakenly compared to Karl May—did not shy away from offering at times scathing criticism of the inhumane racial and immigration policies of the American authorities, criticism that remains as relevant today as ever. Wilken developed his distinctive style early on, dramatically expanding the boundaries of the one-dimensional Western genre.

“It’s time to once again honor the work of this magnificent author and present his novels to both fans from back then and new readers.” ALFRED WALLON
