Cynthia Meloys Antiquitätenläden scheint nachts von Geistern heimgesucht zu werden. Als Skulpturen mit Farbe besudelt und ihre Katze getötet werden, entschließt sich die alte Dame, dem Werben von Harry Jennings, einem Antiquitätenhändler aus London, nachzugeben und das Geschäft zu verkaufen. Doch da taucht mit Mortimer Ewing ein weiterer Interessent auf, der Jennings zu kennen scheint. Meloys Nachbarin, Judy Treaver, hilft der alten Dame beim Umzug, und das Geschäft geht an Jennings über. Das alles geht Pater Brown ein wenig zu schnell, und so nehmen er und sein Freund und Kollege Hercule Flambeau die Ermittlungen auf, um den bösen Geistern auf die Spur zu kommen.
