A book that helps you to help yourself
"As a man Thinketh" by James Allen. Written in 1903, this book is a literary essay. He says, "this is a book that will help you to help yourself" and it's true. A small book of just 96 pages, is truly a power packed treasure. It is just about human thoughts. How they shape a man. How to attain & retain success. The book has seven chapters in total each dealing with character, circumstances, health, purpose, achievement vision and serenity. Written in a spiritual tone, this book is a valuable source of inspiration ever since it's first publication. The title of the book is inspired by biblical verse from the book of Proverbs 23:7 -"As a man Thinketh in his heart, so is he". My rating 5.0/5.0. 🙏

Brian Holsopple has an excellent voice for narration and paces the reading of the book perfectly.

Clear and beautiful
Would you consider the audio edition of As a Man Thinketh to be better than the print version?
I love the comparison between mind and garden. How we grow has to do with what we choose to cultivate and what we choose to weed out. The message really resonated with me and had a strong immediate effect on my consciousness. We easily forget our own power and this is a good reminder, a small step back to get a clearer view. It's short and it is a pleasure so I'll probably listen to it again.
What does Brian Holsopple bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I think his pacing is just right.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, but I didn't seat, I went for a walk, that is why I use audiobooks.

Great timeless book and very good narration
What made the experience of listening to As a Man Thinketh the most enjoyable?
I like the narration. I listened to several excerpts and this is one of the best narrations for this book.
What other book might you compare As a Man Thinketh to, and why?
This book is about changing your character and have it reflect in your external circumstances. I find it more practical than some of the other 'law of attraction' books so I'll even compare it to a very practical self-help book like On Form by James E. Loehr and Tony Schwartz.
What does Brian Holsopple bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
I liked the commanding voice of the narrator compared to many other audio books I've listened to.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes

Basic yet fundamental
Given this book was written in 1907, it has survived the test of time with a handful of other personal development books.
I'm an atheist and books with a religious lean lose my attention very quickly. This book reflects the attitudes of the time so it has a religious tilt in the language used, however I did not feel that I was listening to a sermon.
The basic message is keep your mind good and pure and serenity will follow. It does not define any of these so it can be interpreted using your own moral compass and therefore used by most. The only people who are unlikely to benefit from listening to this book are those with a moral compass that justifies things that you know deep down are wrong.

Makes you think about what you think
I enjoyed this audible as its not too long and it really is to the point , it is direct in its old fashioned narrative which gives it a real old age authentic feel as it was written many many years ago. It's not preachy as some older texts can be yet does really put it in plain yet bygone old English the importance of how our very thoughts do have a lasting power in the creation of our lives .. Really good and as its not too long it is a nice comfortable listen which seems to always deliver the message read after read ... The very premise of the book being how our thoughts control or very lives brings you to a kind of mental pause allowing you to take stock of things which in itself is always a good thing as life is many times on turbo and we don't always pay attention to what we think and often end up with results which we are not always happy with , crap circumstances are often a result of poor habits which are born of improper thinking , which kinda stands to reason why the very act of taking more care in what we allow to dominate our thoughts will greatly dictate what we see turn up in our lives .. Have a listen then stop and have a mental check of what thoughts dominate your life ..🙂

the source for our recent gurus
To most of us used to the teachings of the recent greats, this may seem a little old fashioned in its language... however, here is the source for many of the recent and current proponents of the self-development movement.
much of what's said here will already be familiar but it's nice to be able to hear the original ideas and as always, you can still relate the information to your situation.
For this price, crazy not to spend an hour reinforcing your self beliefs and understandings!

Classic Simplicity
A brilliant short book with brilliant ideas. Some Perhaps an over emphasis on the impact of personal effort on one's circumstances (there are many factors contributing to people's circumstances that cannot be controlled). Also, the gender biased language made me cringe! Understandable from the time it was written, but definitely outdated reference to 'man', etc. Otherwise wonderful.
