It is Christmas in the Helmer household. Nora is happy: her husband Torvald has just been made manager of the bank, the money worries of the past are over, and the house is full of presents. Torvald calls her his little lark and his squirrel, and treats her like a charming child. But Nora has a secret. Years ago, to save his life, she borrowed money and forged a signature to do it.
When Krogstad, a clerk at the bank whom Torvald means to dismiss, turns out to hold her note, the secret becomes a threat. Over three days Nora tries everything to keep the truth from her husband, helped by her old friend Mrs Linde and watched by the dying Doctor Rank, until the letter in the box can no longer be stopped and she finally sees her marriage clearly.
First performed in 1879, A Doll's House caused a sensation across Europe, and Nora's last scene remains one of the most famous in the theatre. Ibsen's play about honesty, freedom and a woman's right to her own life still feels startlingly modern. This new translation presents the complete play, read in full.
