Ethan Quek checks his sleep score before he's properly awake. He runs the same loop along the canal every morning, and the heron that stands in the shallows there stopped being a bird to him a long time ago. It's the two-kilometer mark.
Then a parcel turns up at his flat in Singapore, leaking butter through its cloth. Inside, beside a cracked clay jar, is a four-page letter from a woman named Yangzom.
Yangzom runs a guesthouse in Chumig, a Himalayan valley you can't drive to. For six years her bookings have been quietly falling apart. Families she isn't expecting appear in her yard at seven in the evening, while the guests she is expecting never come. She has started to suspect the problem is her. Somebody once told her that a man called Quek notices things nobody else does, and it took her months to track him down.
Her letter ends with a warning: "There is no telephone signal in the valley. I mention this now so that you can be annoyed about it here, where it is cheaper."
Ethan takes the job. The road gives out long before Chumig, so he walks the rest with Tsering, a guide who is not good with clocks. At the guesthouse a blue fire burns in the stove. There's a lake in the valley that doesn't reflect the sky that's actually there. He has three weeks pencilled in.
