Luli's First Autumn is a heartwarming children's story about an eight-year-old Cuban immigrant experiencing her first autumn in Illinois. After growing up in Marianao, Cuba, where the seasons are very different, Luli is fascinated by the brilliant red, orange, and yellow leaves she sees on her way to school. She is equally curious about Halloween, a tradition she has never celebrated. At school, Luli watches her teacher carve a jack-o'-lantern and learns about the Halloween celebration and parade. But there is one problem: Luli is not sure she will have a costume to wear. Her family is adjusting to life in a new country, and buying a costume is not a priority when they are still making ends meet. With the help of a kind neighbor, Luli and her younger brother Mayi receive homemade Halloween costumes and proudly take part in the school parade. Then, just when Luli thinks Halloween could not get any better, her name is chosen in a classroom raffle to take home the smiling jack-o'-lantern. The story celebrates family, kindness, cultural discovery, immigration, friendship, inclusion, and the joy of experiencing a new tradition.©2025 Lourdes Fasani (P)2026 Lourdes Fasani
