In the little town of Ulthar, beyond the river Skai, there is an ancient law: no man may kill a cat. This is the story of how that law came to be.
Long ago, a sour old cottager and his wife lived at the edge of the town, and they took a private pleasure in trapping and killing the cats of their neighbours. Nobody dared confront them. Then a caravan of dark wanderers from the south came through Ulthar, and among them was an orphan boy whose only companion in the world was a small black kitten. When the kitten failed to return, the boy prayed in a language no one in the town could understand, and the sky above the caravan took strange shapes.
Written in 1920, The Cats of Ulthar is one of H.P. Lovecraft’s own favourites among his tales, and one of the finest of his Dream Cycle stories. It is a short, dark fable of cruelty and retribution, told with the cadence of ancient myth.
