Backs against the wall...

The mission: train the local resistance on the planet Verthandi to resist their Draconis Combine masters.

But things do not go well almost from the moment the Legion arrives. Trapped on Verthandi and facing a superior force and a fractured populace, the men and women of the Legion find themselves in a situation that makes the campaign on Trellwan look like a walk in the park. PLEASE keep releasing the battletech legends books

I'm going through them once again in chronological order via E-book but the experience isn't nearly as good as audiobook. Please keep making them because I want to buy them all in audiobooks form too!!!

Much better

I did not like the first book in the series. Probably because I came from Warhammer 40k and have them as my "scifi war" standard. This book felt much more mature and better written. There are still somethings that I cringed at while listening but overall this is a decent story. The narrator was perfect though. The moment he switched to a Scottish accent was when I started loving this audio book.

More Battletech!

Simply enjoyable. I read these books many years ago and although they are not as complex as some might like the story is still entertaining and engaging.

Please bring more Battletech to Audible.
I would love to see the Jade Phoenix trilogy.

What can I say except thank you

Battletech is always close at heart for me, since the early days of my childhood playing mechwarrior 3 and 4 with my dad and it's sweet flight stick set up. I was a avid reader when I was younger and often I would come back to reading the battletech books. I honestly couldn't recommend this book I'm so happy and excited that they are releasing the gray death legion saga and I hope they release oh so so much more. Until then I will wait for the sweet embrace of the mech cockpit once again.

A classic and thoroughly enjoyable

This is a classic Battletech novel and has the delightfully gritty, lived-in vibe of the late 3rd Succession War period, my favorite era in the whole saga. The novel is very detailed in describing tactics, machines, and battles. There are a few issues: the planets Verthandi and Galatea are much too close together - only a jump or two apart (probably their positions on the map hadn’t been nailed down when it was written), Steiner and Kurita are strangely not at war, and it seems the good guys always get the critical hits. Despite this, the novel has been a favorite of mine for over twenty years. I miss this era before the technical renaissance, ironically caused by the very unit this story is built around, began.

The audio book is very well done. The only complaints I have are that most Kuritans sound Russian, and the narrator doesn’t really have the vocal range for female voices, and thus all the female characters sound panicked because their voices are always breaking. But he does an excellent job of capturing whatever emotions are in the scene, and of painting the picture of the story with his voice.

Solid but not remarkable

Better than the first, but dragged a bit in placed. Female characterization lacking, but expected given the time these books were written.

Wonderful follow-up

Great story, continues with the same depth as book one. Characters are portrayed well, and the overall story flows well and kept me interested.

The performance was also delivered with the same high standard.

Looking forward to the next book in the saga.
