Ralph Waldo Emerson nació en Boston, en 1803. Estudió en Harvard y en la Cambridge Divinity School. Viajó a Europa donde conoció al escritor británico Thomas Carlyle y a poetas como coleridge o Wordsworth. Volvió a los Estados Unidos en 1833 y se estableció como poeta, escritor y profesor. Es conocido por el transcendentalismo en sus obras.
