A SERIAL KILLER ON A POISONOUS MISSION PUSHES NIKKI AND HER TEAM TO BREAKING POINT

Revellers are flocking into Greenborough for the yearly Dark Greenborough Festival, a three-day event celebrating local folklore, superstition, and the darker side of life.

What the public doesn't know is that there has been a warning sent to the police, saying that Greenborough will be a very dangerous place this year. The anonymous letter ends with the Latin phrase, Mors certa, hora incerta: Death is certain, the hour uncertain.

DI Nikki Galena and her team soon discover this is no hoax, as people start dying from what appears to be alcoholic poisoning. Things rapidly escalate, and as the deaths get more horrific, Nikki realizes they have a serial killer in their midst.

Good ... but,

This series has been severely lagging since they’ve introduced Nikki’s mother.
Her, and her group of old crones are running around like the Snoop Sisters, Jane Marple, and Jessica Fletcher combined.

Anyway .... good story in spite of the subplot.

Creative serial killer

DARKNESS ON THE FENS, Book 10 in the Nikki Galena series, is yet another winner from English author Joy Ellis. This is likely the most complex novel in the series. I do wish the author would end the involvement of Nikki's mother and her crime sleuthing friends Narration by Henrietta Meire is superb as usual.

The novels in this series are standalone.

Just not enjoyable. No more for me. Guess the series has just gotten old and worn.

Flashbacks, Poison, and Murder

Book ten in the DI Nikki Galena series has the team preparing for a scary festival which brings in a lot of money, but also a lot of alcohol, drugs and mischief. But no one knew that it would bring in the type of evil that they would be faced with this year. At first, they suspect alcohol poisoning, but as things escalate, it becomes clear that they have a serial killer on their hands. I like that Nikki’s mom and her friends are a part of the story, with their particular set of skills, and that Joseph’s friend, Vinnie from his military days is back. As the evil engulfs them, Joseph increasingly has problems separating his feelings from the current day and when he was in uniform, and his desire to take out the bad guys threatens to control him. His flashbacks from his time in the military return, and Vinnie tries to convince him that they have to do things by the book. Nikki is having a hard time remembering her daughter whom she lost years earlier, as her birthday reminds her again of all she has lost. The team works feverishly to find the killer, with little to go on. I could not figure out who it was. Great story and an end worth the wait!

Great Read

I've read more than one critism of adding the characters of Galena's mother and friends, but I quite enjoy the unfolding of those tendrils. I look forward to the continuing stories and the character's growth.

A bit over the top

I have enjoyed previous volumes in the Nikki Galena series, but both the plot and the breathless narration of this one seems a bit over the top. Nothing in Joseph’s previous character development, nor in the plot seems to warrant such a violent, dishonorable reaction. It just wasn’t believable. It felt every inch a plot device to cause tension.

Enjoyed the narrator and the mystery started well. But it was that tall building: walk down or fall down -- early on hint that
started my collecting "indicators that this would end as an average British Detective Book. I enjoyed the 3 day festival celerating several hundred years of ghosts, ghouls and fresh deaths. I liked he characters but ....

Irritating but strangely addictive

I don't know why I continue with this series - I've never really taken to Nikki Galena, I find Joseph so excruciatingly perfect he sets my teeth on edge. The plots aren't great and nor is the narration. But, as they say, don't let that put you off. For some unknown reason I still avidly purchase each instalment and despite all of my misgivings do genuinely enjoy the experience.

Darkness on the fens

Joy Ellis came up with another intriguing enjoyable storyline . Narrator's interpretation of local dialect somewhat lacking tho!

Another brilliant book in the series

Love this series and the characters, the overuse of the word incredulous in the whole series is my only criticism. I live in the fens so particularly love the local references.

Terrible narrative

I have listened to quite a few of Joy Ellis stories they are good , this story has been ruined for me by the narrator.
Her portrayal of the different characters voices is dire especially the men .
I have given up with 5 hours to go , I just can’t go on !!!!!

Spoiled by poor narration

I have enjoyed all of Joy Ellis’s books but why oh why does she stick with Henrietta Meire ? Her characterisation is woeful and her constant mispronunciations are laughable but bad enough to spoil your enjoyment of the book.

Great Resolution

The longest book in this series, I found it overly-complex in some parts (in comparison to what you would expect for a series like this - definitely still digestible and enjoyable) but overall completely enjoyed another great mystery. The character stories were wrapped up very well, without being overly perfect or too sweet.

Will be sad to leave this series behind. Really good, fast paced reading.

Happy to hear another chapter

Good to relax with another story, this time one that knits a thread of history into it's premise. I wonder if that kind of thing really happened or just good lateral thinking by the author. Nice work.

I love this series

I have both the e books and the audio books and I have read/listened to them more than once. Nikki is great although she sometimes makes me grit my teeth. She can send people crazy but you would always want her on your side.
Narrator Henrietta Meire was an excellent choice to voice Nikki.
Highly recommended.
