Elisabeth Stanford kann es nicht fassen. Für eine mehr als fragwürdige UFO-Story schickt ihre Zeitung sie nach Rosswell in New Mexico. Jenem Ort, in dem in den 50er Jahren bereits einmal Ufos Schlagzeilen gemacht haben. Kaum dort angekommen, scheint jemand auf telepathischen Wege Kontakt mit ihr aufzunehmen und berichtet von einem ultrageheimen Bombenprojekt. Zunächst schenkt sie den geistig übermittelten Worten des Mannes, der sich als Dr. Mertens aus Deutschland vorstellt, keinen Glauben. Doch als sie kurz darauf beinahe einem gezielten Mordattentat zum Opfer fällt, ändert sich alles.

Bald darauf macht sie sich mit einer Freundin auf den Weg, den Hinweisen des geheimnisvollen Arztes zu folgen, ohne zu ahnen, wie lebensgefährlich diese Recherche werden wird. Doch durch den Kontakt mit Dr. Mertens entwickelt Stanford Kräfte, von denen ihre Gegner nicht das Geringste ahnen.
