Märchen bildet in China kein streng gesondertes Gebiet. Von den Ammengeschichten und Fabeln bis zu Göttermythen, Sagen und Novellen sind die Grenzen durchaus schwankend. Das Wunderbare gehört für China noch zum natürlichen Weltlauf, so dass hier sich keine scharfe Grenze ziehen lässt.
Es heißt, dass wenn der Fuchs das Lebenselixier bereitet, er sich verwandeln kann. Er muss aber dreimal dem Schicksal des Todes durch den Donner entgehen, ehe er es zur Vollendung bringt. Das gelingt ihm nicht leicht. Er hat aber mehrere Arten, dem Schicksal zu entgehen.
