In dem kleinen Ort Barnsleigh Hill taucht in einer stürmischen Nacht eine junge Frau auf, die sich Angel nennt. Niemand weiß, woher sie kommt. Von dem Ehepaar Patrick und Nora Fayne wird die Frau liebevoll in ihr Haus aufgenommen. Doch die Harmonie währt nicht lange, denn schon bald kommt es zu Spannungen, die nach und nach den gesamten Ort überschatten.

Eines Tages wird Angel am Ufer des Dorfweihers gefunden - ermordet. Ein Schuldiger wird schnell ausgemacht und festgenommen. Alles hat den Anschein, als könne das Dorf nun wieder zur Tagesordnung übergehen. Wenn da nicht ein gewisser Sherlock Holmes wäre, der nicht an die allzu hastig gefundene Lösung glauben mag...
