Whether you're 20, 40, 60 or older, many of us are still looking for an answer to that perennial question: 'what do I want to be when I grow up?'
In Designing Your Life, Silicon Valley design innovators Bill Burnett and Dave Evans use their expertise to help you work out what you want - and how to get it. Their phenomenally successful Life Design course has been tried and tested by thousands of people, from students to midcareer professionals to retirees contemplating whole new futures.
Now in audiobook form, their simple method will teach you how to use basic design tools to create a life that will work for you. Using lots of real-life stories and proven techniques like reframing, prototyping and mind-mapping, you will learn how to build your way forwards, step by positive step, to a life that's better by a design of your own making. Because a well-designed life means a life well lived.

It can change your life
This book has the power to change lives. I am writing this after listening to this Audiobook twice in 3 months. And I feel I will do it again. It’s not a book, it is a toolkit. Toolkit for real authentic transformation.

A fantastic start with an usual end.
it starts with solid Foundations of Design thinking and gives clear map of the process of designing life. However, during later half it becomes just one of the many self help books.

Excited to plan my life!
When I listened to the audiobook I am excited to try out the exercises, the exercises are gradual and not overwhelming. I am a big fan of design thinking, so this is a fun experiment, I know people who made big leaps in their lives because of the things they discovered about themselves from the exercises. Audiobook might require rereading them because of the details and the exercise, not something we can listen to mindlessly doing chores.

There are better alternatives
I don't like to be mean but this was so dull I couldn't finish it, and that's very unusual. it does offer a plan to be worked through - perhaps it works better as a book. I have recently listened to Tara Swart's 'The Source' and Rangan Chatterjee's first two books. Although not quite the same sort of thing, I'd recommend them if you're looking to make changes in your life.

One of the best audiobooks I have ever listened to
Fascinating. Practical. Engaging. Relevant. This is a book that I will come back to again and again. Strongly recommend you listen to this with a notebook to hand and print the relevant PDFs (link on Audible or the authors' website) and make sure you are able to pause and do the writing exercises. Everyone should listen to this and work through the exercises.

Thought I already knew the bulk of what this book was going to say having watched a few talks on the subject from the authors. Really glad I listened to it anyways because it offered so much more insight! Really worth the read!

Stimulating, inspiring and highly digestible.
Would you consider the audio edition of Designing Your Life to be better than the print version?
I have only listened to the audio version and will be using the print version as an ongoing resource.
What other book might you compare Designing Your Life to, and why?
Designing Your Life inspired me this year the way A Beautiful Constraint inspired me in 2016. Both strongly academically based, yet highly pragmatically pitched; multiple case studies added credibility throughout, and the product of mature collaboration.
Which character – as performed by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans – was your favourite?
Bill and Dave offer complementary styles and as we worked through the book I started getting excited as I approached each new Chapter, presented alternately by the authors, in anticipation of reconnecting with my increasingly familiar author/friends. Dave's sense of humour colours every sentence without compromising the gravitas of the content. Bill's slightly more monotonic and steady delivery adds a sense of thoughtful seriousness to the mix. Despite the swapping for each chapter, continuity is maintained faultlessly and the sense of collaboration is constant.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
The emotional reaction was not one of sadness or ecstasy as in a "laugh or cry" response, Moreso one of exhilaration and enthusiasm about a newly discovered approach to career and life development.

Look at your life in a whole new perspective
I read so many self-help books but this one is different, so different that I wouldn't even call it self help. The authors help you reflect on your life from a logical design perspective, rather than looking to spirituality and philosophy to design your life, this book teaches you that you don't have one life but many infinite lives you can choose.
Highly recommend to absolutely everyone!

Good for under 25's but useless for those older.
I can see the benefit of the processes to people just starting out with their career but the same tired old advice for those with some life experience.
