I am a Filthy casual...
I have never put much effort into being a better poker player it's just been entertainment for me kind of like playing golf or going to a movie. I played a tourney at a local card room for fun a few weeks back and made it to about 20th out of 40 players. After I was kicked I decided to learn a little more about the game so I could compete better I mean the people in the tourney were no different than me right? I Listened to this book twice on a long road trip, downloaded an app on my phone to do a little practicing and entered the same weekly tournament the very next week. I WON IT, granted I got some great draws but I was in them when I was supposed to be and out when I the odds were not in my favor. It was crazy playing the same exact players I had played the week earlier but this time I wasn't playing by feel I was actually processing and thinking on every hand. This book has forever changed the way I play poker, I'm better, with out a doubt, but it is also a lot more fun, the cards will always be subject to luck but I don't gamble anymore, I make educated decisions based on the probability not my gut. I highly recommend this book, it is straight forward no cryptic explanations that leave you wondering "wtf did he just say?" Great read well worth it.

Great poker book - must read!
I actually bought this book a while back, but I have been too busy to read it. I was very excited to see the Audible version come out. If you're a busy person like me and don't have a lot of time to read a book, this is the perfect way to gain the essential poker math knowledge from this amazing book. It's a must read for any poker player, so if you don't have time to read, you need to get this audio version asap! You can listen to it very easily in so many situations such as when driving in your car, working around the house, getting ready for bed, etc.
And if you do have a chance, it's much easier to take notes while listening to the book instead of reading the actual book. Having said that, there are practice hands at the end of the chapters as well as some reference materials at the end of the book, so you can just go back through those instead of taking your own notes if you prefer.
I have played poker for many years, and as the book states, the game has evolved. The math has definitely changed, and this book does an outstanding job explaining how it all works now. These concepts are critical, so all poker players must read this book. If you don't have time, you must get the audio book because you will learn these critical concepts while doing other things, and the payoff is immediate (during your next poker game).
I really liked how each chapter touched on topics, later chapters explained each in detail, and then it was all put together showing the big picture. This allows the reader to ease in to each topic, learn the basics, and they when it's all brought togehter, it is very easy and smooth. These are the critical concepts you must learn today:
Pot odds
Implied odds
Equity
Expected Value
Rule of 2 and 4
I've read about and used some of these in the past, but this book makes all calculations so much easier and faster to do. And a lot of older books focus on limit games, and these concepts do not work the same as they do in no limit. I love the practice hands - they are so much better than example hands from other books. All other poker math books I have read get too complicated, and it makes me not want to read them. This one makes everything so simple, easy to understand, and easy to use.
I could go on and on. The bottom line is that you need this book, it is worth every penny, and you will quickly become a better poker player with long-term profitabiliity when you invest in this book. I've read other books by this authoer, and they are all very solid and worth the price. And with this book, you get a free enrollment in his Essential Poker Math course at MicroGrinder Poker School. Stop reading my review - go read this book and make more money in your game!

This is an AMAZING poker book!
I've been playing poker on and off for years, but was lacking a solid understanding of all the math that goes into high level poker. Alton's book is perfect for learning poker math. He is able to explain concepts that I had 'learned' from multiple other sources in a way that really sunk in! And now with an audio book version of his book you don't even have to take your eyes off the poker table and stop playing to learn about poker!

You definitely need prior knowledge
Do a good Google search on poker lingo before you dive in this title. I wish the author had made chapter two all about lingo so that a casual at a buddies house once a month player can easily grasp this knowledge without having to stop several times during the first few chapters to go reference something. Although this book does seem to reach out to experienced players looking to get better, it would do well to have a chapter referring and explaining lingo so novices can easily pick up this game knowledge from the examples aswell.
Other then absolutely needing prerequisite knowledge, this is a great title for what it's for.

Your Poker Hand Equity Will Increase!
You don't need a degree in math for this audio book. It is well thought out and is accessible to all. Each section logically follows the other and develops on the previous section. Plenty of examples. Makes my drive into work much more palatable and playing at Foxwoods more lucrative. I highly recommend.

The Definitive Poker Math Course - Taught to You!
Alton's book by the same title is the one poker math course that is comprehensive, straightforward, well-laid out, detailed, and chock full of exercises with explanations of the answers. Poker math can be so confusing with the many calculation methods and different "comparisons" to make decisions. Alton cuts through all of that. You become proficient in utilizing poker math for DECISION MAKING - which is the whole point, right? No poker play is complete unless you incorporate the math. Alton always explains all the parameters in a decision, including the critical math component.
The Expanded edition comes alive in this Audible version - I feel that I am in class being taught 1 on 1. I can absorb the salient points while concentrating on the learning without flipping pages back and forth. It is surprising how easy it is to follow the calculations, results, and decision points. After all - while playing live or on-line you have to be "thinking", not running the calculator. Listening to the book starts you on that journey of doing the math in your head. I have studied his book twice three years apart and this audio version is helping me transition to a cerebral methodology.
Commuting, working around the house, reclining with a headset - all opportunities to multi-task with this Audible version to learn. Affording a very meaningful increase in study time.
The narrator is excellent - a hired professional with a strong voice, paced dictation, and appropriate inflections.
An extra Alton offers is his companion video course based on this book at no charge. Worth the price of admission itself.
I do replay sections as I also reread pages in the book - to properly apply poker math you are going to have to study to learn it. The sequential building of process is what turned the light bulb on for me in applying the math.
This course has a number of closing chapters that train you in a selection of frequent situations - such as "pre-flop all-ins" and "set mining". These are invaluable - I follow-up by filtering these situations in my hand database after hearing that section to "see" these in actual play hands. This brings the concepts to life as I previously faced them. I was surprised how many of these situations I had faced over a large hand sample.
In closing - I would like to reemphasize that while you learn the calculations Alton is incorporating that into your decision making pulling together all of the dimensions such as position, opponent player type, etc. Making your play robust - and for me, a feeling of being more in command.
I am very jealous of my training time - making it worthwhile and productive - you can't go wrong with Essential Poker Math delivered in this personal, enjoyable, and fun format.

Excellent work on Poker Math!
This was one of the first books I read as I worked to bring my poker game to the next level! Alton does a great job in explaining Poker Math concepts and how to think about them. I was a bit disturbed by some of the reviews on the book that criticized the book for being too simplified. I think what those reviews missed is that Alton's topic is not expansive. He is not trying to tackle all of the other nuanced concepts in poker such as extensive game theory or hand reading skills etc. He is talking strictly about POKER MATH and how those concepts can help you understand whether you a playing a strategic game or if you are gambling. If you are interested in this aspect of the game of poker then this is the book for you!
Great Job Alton - I would love to see books that also address other aspects of poker as you have a nice way of explaining concepts very clearly!!!

Useful information for all skill levels
I've been playing for a while but sadly never gave the math much thought. This book gave me a great fundamental foundation to build on. I've been playing for a few years now and my game has already improved. Especially valuable to me were the chapters on set mining (which I basically always did but learned in this book is often unprofitable), and 3-bet bluffing (which I never did but learned can often be profitable in some spots). All in all, Alton did a great job on this book and I look forward to listening to more from him in the future. Thank you.

Perfect for Beginners!
Great intro to basic poker math. I was looking for something to brush up on the basics and this did the trick. Everything I wanted to learn in a clear, concise and to-the-point manner...talks about essential poker math and nothing else...just what I wanted. It's not an advanced poker math book, so if that is what you're looking for, look elsewhere, but if you want to brush up on the basic I highly recommend! Also, the included course is wonderful bonus!

Good overview of the basic poker math
This book is a good place to start if you are just getting into the game or if you have been playing on for a while and want to get a handle on the theory.
The book is written very clearly, is easy read and gives a good overview of the basic poker math you will need at the tables or online.
Even if maths is not you strong point, this book will be great for you. The concepts are introduced and covered comprehensively in a way that anyone would understand.
I like the balance between theory and
then working through example hands. I would recommend it for beginner to intermediate poker players, as i feel it has definately helped to give me a bit more of an edge at the table.

More than an Audiobook, a distance learning course
Firstly, let me start out by saying the book, and audiobook are excellent in the traditional poker book sense. Information, theory, mathematics and discussion that will improve your game. As I review it, it will become clear why I found it to be more than an audiobook.
I am absolutely no mathematician but the maths (or math) here is explained in a way that is understandable, easy to digest and straightforward to implement into your game. It's well-written, clear, concise and well-narrated.
An audiobook about poker? An audiobook about mathematics? How can you follow the example hands etc? Don't you just get lost? Would reading the physical copy be better? Well, that's what I thought until I gave it a go. Actually, you can listen and take notes. You can take notes, re-wind and condense your notes. You can listen while you're busy and allow some info to wash over you and then revisit it later with your notepad in hand and embed/consolidate knowledge gained from your 'listen while gardening' or 'listen while driving/washing up', whenever you did your casual listen. Actually, you can also visualise the example hands instead of seeing them written in paper. As the narrator reads them they then develop in 'real-time' in your minds eye? making the process more similar to thinking in/about real situations at the table. Your eyes can't scan ahead and give away the answer. You're more inclined to have your honest assessment of the next move in your mind when you hear the correct mathematical explanation. This is closer to genuine practise/correction than reading is, and therefore consolidates the learning process.
Furthermore, and here is the value that really makes this more than an Audiobook, it is literally more than an audiobook. Purchasing the audiobook (or using one of your Audible credits) gives you access to an online series of lectures which complement the book. These video lectures, available to watch on demand, have PowerPoint presentations, 'recorded live' explanations and analysis, and everything you would expect from a distance learning 'night-class' style course. Additionally, you get to download a copy of the lecture resources as PDF files. These can be used to scribble additional notes on, or to re-read and revisit (you can re-watch the videos too by the way). The videos even have a comments section as part of the Microgrinder pokerschool, so you have a degree of interaction and support to supplement your study of this book.
So: you have the book to listen to, take notes if you wish; a video course to go with it; lecture resources to download and read; and potential interaction with your 'tutor' or other studying peers. This is a comprehensive poker course hitting all aspects of learning styles, visual, audible, written/reading, interactive etc to really support the learning process.
You know what, if you just want a great poker book to listen to, it's that too.

Best Poker Book on Audible Right Now
The Essential Poker Math by Alton Hardin is an excellent poker book for beginners and seasoned players alike. Hardin explains the most important strategic concepts in a clear understandable way. The book is easy to listen, and contains so much information I will no doubt be listening it again. You get so much more than the basic strategy that you can find in any other poker book.
The chapters are short enough for you to quickly listen them again to refresh your memory. The extra online video course is of course a huge plus, and really helps to solidify the concepts in this audio book. Highly recommended!

Great method for anyone looking to advance in the world of poker.
If you're interested in advancing up a level and find it easier to study the old fashioned method that is similar to a class I would recommend this is the way to go, I found that listening to a chapter of what area I was looking to improve my game, this was a great method! I wrote down the equations that you are taught in the audio book and make some scenarios for yourself to figure out when you're grasping the subject, go over it with you're equations you're taught in the book or with the equity calculator that is suggested in the book to double check you're answers. Having this way of learning I find it easier then just reading over pages to get a grasp of the concepts you need to make snap decisions during you're game based on the math, with risk/reward implied odds that you learn in you're journey you will tidy up any maniac calls that you might of been doing beforehand. You should be doing the math if upping you're game and playing seriously and this is the path I have taken myself. The narrator Joshua Alexander makes it easy listening and Altons method of writing is digestible so you don't need to worry if you are thinking that the concept of the Math is going to put you into a corner you're struggle with. I suggest this Audio book to anyone who also just enjoys playing the game as well and is interested to see how a poker player thinks beyond the basic method of position and aggression style. I have also purchased the hard copy of the book that does have everything in black and white for you to draft from as well. I say go for it and enjoy the journey.

Excellent coaching book
I have a number of Alton's poker books and was hoping that one might be converted into an audio book, so I was delighted to see this book available. I was not disappointed. Alton's books and video courses are excellent especially for poker newbies. This audio book is no exception; it is extremely well written and explains poker math concepts clearly and easily.
The narration is excellent too. The voice is clear and engaging.
I hope that Alton converts more of his fine coaching books into audio form.
